There are three levels in the Independent School Entrance Examination that are used by most of the private schools and magnet schools to help them assess your child’s skills and be able to rank him or her with his abilities and achievements against the other students his or her age. These levels are the Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level.

If your child is currently in grade 4 or 5, he or she will be assessed by the chosen school based on his or her performance in the ISEE Lower Level Test to see if he or she meets their requirement to be admitted to grade 5 to 6 on their school.

All the three levels have the same concepts such as the verbal, math I, reading, math II, and essay writing. Verbal and quantitative reasoning will test your child on both vocabulary and mathematical reasoning skills and concepts. Reading comprehension will involve reading short passages and then answering questions related to it. And, in essay writing, your child will be tasked to create an essay about an assigned topic.

Although all the levels are the same with their contents, each one is structured differently. In verbal, your child will be given 20 minutes to answer questions about synonyms or sentence completion. Math II, which is focusing on reasoning and application, has 35 multiple choice questions and quantitative comparisons that your child needs to answer in 35 minutes. Reading has 36 questions that are needed to be answered in 40 minutes. Math II, which is focusing on computation and application, has 45 multiple choice questions and be given 45 minutes to answer them. And, in the essay writing, your child will be given 30 minutes to finish it.
Just like all the other levels, the scoring is the same. Answer sheets, together with the essay created, are sent to the ISEE Operations Office. Only the four multiple choice sections will be scored and produced with the Individual Student Report (ISR). The essay will not be scored but will be photocopied and sent to the school of choice together with the ISR. The test is scored based on the total number of correct answers while the wrong ones will not be penalized.

Since each school has their own standards and criteria for admission, you would not really know what a good score is unless you ask them during the interview. And because this test can only be taken once in every six-moth period, it is best to have your child prepared for it.

• Understand the 3 levels of the test. The lower level is for those who will be entering fifth or sixth grade, the middle is for those going into seventh or eighth, and the upper is for those entering ninth through 12th grades.

ISEE or The Independent School Entrance Exam

Is an admission test developed by the Educational
Records Bureau (ERB) for its member schools as part of their admission process. The ISEE was created 
by Measurement Incorporated, Durham, NC, and ERB, with assistance from faculty of ERB member 
schools.
The current edition has been updated to include educational assessment best practices and to align with 
national standards in English and mathematics as articulated in standards adopted by the National 
Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). 
Nearly two-thirds of the questions on the ISEE were developed by ERB-member faculty and 
administrators from a cross section of independent schools across the United States under the direction 
of test development specialists at Measurement Incorporated.
The ISEE is the admission test of choice for many independent schools throughout the country and 
abroad. Test sites are available in numerous cities during the admission testing season. The ISEE
consists of five sections at three levels designed to measure the verbal and quantitative reasoning and 
achievement of students in grades 4–11 seeking admission to grades 5–12 in independent schools. 
Students seeking admission to grades 5 or 6 take the Lower Level; students seeking admission to 
grades 7 or 8 take the Middle Level; and students seeking admission to grades 9–12 take the 
Upper Level.
It is important to note that the ISEE may not be taken for practice; it may be taken only for the purpose
of providing scores to participating schools as part of the admission process. An applicant may take the
ISEE only once per admission season or six month window.
The five sections that make up the ISEE are (in order of testing): Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative
Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and an Essay which is written by
the student in response to a given writing prompt. Each section is designed to tap into a unique aspect of
a student’s preparation for academic work.

Each student should choose one of three levels of ISEE tests, Lower Level, Middle Level, or Upper Level, depending on the grade the student is seeking admission. The following table lists the corresponding ISEE test a student should choose.

ISEE scoring

The ISEE has a lower-level test for students currently in grades 4 and 5, a middle-level test for students currently in grades 6 and 7, and an upper-level test for students currently in grades 8 to 11. The test consists of a verbal reasoning section with synonyms and sentence completion sections, two math sections (quantitative reasoning and mathematics achievement), and a reading comprehension section. Like the SSAT, the test has an essay that asks students to respond in an organized fashion to a prompt, and the essay isn't scored but is sent to schools to which the child is applying.

The score report for the ISEE includes a scaled score from 760-940 for each level of the test. The score report includes a percentile rank that compares the student to the norm group of all students who took the test over the last three years. For example, a percentile rank of 45% would mean that the student scored the same or better than 45% of the students in his or her norm group who took the test in the last three years. It's different than scoring 45 on a test, in that a percentile rank compares students to other similar students. In addition, the test provides a stanine, or standard nine score, that breaks all the scores into nine groups. Scores below 5 are below average, and those above 5 are above average.

What exactly is the Independent School Entrance Examination, or ISEE? Well, let’s start by defining what is meant by “independent school.” For practical purposes, think of this term as generally referring to private schools in the US that aren’t owned and/or funded by a religious congregation or organization. Public schools are owned and operated by local governments, parochial and other religious schools are owned and operated by religious groups, but independent schools own and operate themselves. (Some of them incorporate religious teachings in their curriculum, but don’t answer to any religious authority.) Independent schools constitute about one percent of all schools in the country. A few public schools the US also use the ISEE; these are usually schools with selective admissions, such as magnet schools.

So how do these schools use the ISEE? Well, many of these schools are viewed as providing a higher quality education than public schools, which means that there is generally a lot of competition for admission to these schools. This means they can’t accept everyone who applies, and they need a fair, unbiased way of screening applicants. In addition, students from all kinds of schools will be applying and no two schools have the same standards, so a common measuring stick is necessary. Also, a standardized test helps the schools properly place the students who do wind up being admitted, making sure they’re learning at an appropriate academic level. The ISEE is a very effective way of addressing all three of these concerns. There are actually three different versions of the test: one for students applying for 5th and 6th grades, another for students applying for 7th and 8th grades, and another for students applying for 9th through 12th grades.

The test is developed and administered by the Educational Records Bureau firm, using standards from the National Council of Teachers of English, the International Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The test takes about three hours to complete, and the standard testing fee is currently $95. It’s $115 for late registration and phone or fax registration, and $125 for registering on location the day of the test. There are also some excellent study aids and other materials that a student can take advantage of in order to get a high score on the exam.
